I live in Old East Durham about 1.5 miles from downtown. The house is older and quaint, but bright and tidy. There is one room for rent that includes an (unattached) private bathroom. The home also has exercise equipment (spin bike, treadmill, weights, yoga mat, mini trampoline), new washer/dryer, dishwasher and central heat/air. The area is quiet and the neighborhood is diverse. I've been here 2.5 years and feel very comfortable.
